I'm sorely disappointed. Second of all, if you think your excuse, however truthful it may be, could sound bogus, maybe it would be worth it to either tell him a) that you would like to take a rain check, or b)that you already have plans. A combination of the two is also effective. If you told me you were going to be baking funeral cookies, it's not likely that you'd be getting a call from me again. That's just me though. P.S.
